Are you a library or book store user? 📚

Hey all! Are you a library or book store user? I use both, but I’d say I use the store more than the library. I’m really lucky where I am that the staff at our local city libraries are amazing and get a huge range of fiction, romance, YA, urban fantasy and sci fi. They also have a massive graphic novel and comic collection and DVDs.

There are a couple of great book stores locally. The Children’s Book Store looks after all my YA needs 🤓😊💕 But, the bigger bookstores in NZ do not carry a lot of romance. This really bugs me. Considering it is a genre that earns more than crime, thriller or sci fi and fantasy, I think NZ needs to catch up a little. 😁

I love having books on my shelves and in the last few years my consumption of ebooks has been huge. I am horribly impatient, so hooray for instant gratification and downloading a book when you see it. 😳The Book Depository is a bit of a godsend too, as shipping from the US is a mare.

I’d love to know where you get most of your books? And do you read more ebooks or paper/hard backs?

The Flame in the Mist by Renee Ahdieh

This was pretty gripping from the get go. Mariko is on her way to be married when her entourage is attacked. The attackers don’t realise they’ve left her alive and because she is near Jukai Forest she believes the deed has been perpetrated by the infamous Black Clan. Hoping to betray the Black Clan and revenge the deaths of her servants, Mariko makes her way through the forest inserting herself into the group dressed as a boy. Adventures ensue.

I loved that Mariko is not a helpless heroine. Despite the setting, she doesn’t necessarily conform to gender roles of the period, which I appreciated. It is written in such a way that it fits in the narrative and isn’t a contemporary implant into that age. I also liked that matter what situation she gets in and despite at times being harrowing, she is always thinking and intrepid, which was quite refreshing to read. She most definitely displays bushidō!

I adored the setting. So often fantasy, particularly in the YA I come across seems to have a very European backdrop. Japan, the culture and mythology is so rich and I felt how it was portrayed was vivid and exciting. Plus, much sweeping court intrigues and magical elements. I think this reminded me a little of Robin Hood and the rising tide of anger amongst the people against the powers that be. There was a little romance and while the tension ramps up a little towards the end of the book it didn’t feel like a total cliff hanger.

I cannot wait for the next book in the series!

Review – Stillhouse Lake by Rachel Caine. I’m on such a…

This was a super creepy and thrilling read. I thoroughly enjoyed it, although at times I felt it required a certain amount of suspension of disbelief. It was well paced and I was on the edge of my seat throughout most of the book and felt the resolution was satisfying. There is another book on the way, as there were some major plot points left hanging, but this didn’t detract from my enjoyment and I’m looking forward to the next book.
I keep hearing about female rage being a trend in fiction and if there is one thing I felt I needed in this book was Gwen taking more control and rage maybe playing more of a part. I’d really like for her to have a John Wick moment or 3. For me I found the power imbalance was hard to read and I wanted her more on the front foot and more in charge. So, hoping for more rage in book 2!
If you’re keen for an edge of your seat, thrilling read pick this up for sure.

Silver Silence by Nalini Singh

A great start to a new trilogy from Nalini Singh. Silver is determined to stay in Silence and carry out her duties as an emergency response coordinator. When she someone attempts to poison her and possibly do damage to the truce and Trinity Accord, Valentin steps in to assist her.
I loved the chemistry between these two and I am more than a little smitten with Valentin. He is a total bear and I loved the secondary characters and the kids. So sweet! Silver is such a strong character, particularly in her willingness to take charge and make changes, even if she’s not sure it will end well. Between her and Valentin it was a total slow burn romance, which I really enjoy. I also thought there was plenty of great world building and I loved the setting in Russia. One character who stood out for me is Arwen. He was so intriguing and I have my fingers crossed that he gets his own book.
A fab new start for a much loved series and I cannot wait for the next book. B+

Dating You / Hating You by Christina Lauren

This was a cute contemporary read. Carter and Evie meet initially at a friends party and the hit if off. Unfortunately, their PR firms merge and they end up going head to head for the same position. I enjoyed the set up of this book, and the sparks certainly flew. But after the merger there is loads more tension and I missed the feels. I did enjoy the set up, but I found it a little difficult to connect to the characters in the last two thirds of the novel.

Cute, contemporary read and definitely an author I’ll pick up again.

Book Candles.

Loving my @flickthewick candles. They smell so delicious! I’m currently reading the latest #nalinisingh and it is so good! It is the beginning of a new series called #psychangelingtrinity Urban fantasy is one of my favourite genres, and it is so nice to delve back in after a few weeks of contemporary romance.

I have a few books to get through in the next few weeks, but I am wondering if I can sneak in a reread of #acowar I read it so quick, that it’d be good to go through a little slower. I love this series.

There is a lot of yelling at the tv in my house this evening, the last Lions Vs Abs game here in NZ. Feel like I should go watch… 😁 🏉
