Shorts.

Reading, I’ve been doing it! Lots.

I’m currently engrossed in Special Forces, the epic tale of Vadim Petrovich Krasnorada and Dan McFadyen from a series of novels by Aleksandr Voinov and Marquesate. It is long. It is not for the faint of heart and I am loving it. I’ve had my nose in this since last week and my interest has yet to flag. The story is pretty simple, SAS Dan meets Soviet spetsnaz Vadim under less than ideal circumstances during the Soviet Unions war in Afghanistan, which leaves Dan with a great deal of hatred towards Vadim. They meet again in the Afghan mountains and begin to form a bond of sorts.

While I feel the book does rely on you quite willingly suspending your disbelief to a certain degree, it’s easy to sit back and be taken in by the world building, characters and tension between the two men. There are also elements that some readers might find difficult, like rape, torture and rather vivid war and fighting scenes. AND dear lord, at times it is like the book that never ends… it goes on and on… I liked it much though, errors and all. PLUS it’s free in ebook form and also availble via Lulu in PB for a small fee.

Special Forces is the 1st book in the series and there are four books in total, comprising of over 1 million words and over 70 chapters. O-o You can check out the books here on either authors website, but be aware there seem to be some differences with editions and authors published work. I suggest checking out both sites before buying or downloading ebooks. Go to Aleksandr Voinov’s site here and Marquesate here.

I was pretty excited to see the new novel from Kate Sherwood. Out Of The Darkness is the second part of her menage series set in horse country in California. I really enjoyed the first book as there was loads of horses, great story telling and a fairly realistic look at how a menage would work.

It took longer to get into the second novel. The power dynamics between the chracters were a little off and often the angst slowed down the story and it didn’t seem to move forward as well as the first book. The actual sex between the 3 was at times awkward and lacked warmth and sexual tension. It felt mechanical. I guess this could be down to new sexual partners and that whole what to put where, but I did find it hard going at times. While there were defnitely parts of the book I enjoyed, I cannot say I liked as much as Dark Horse. You can find Out of the Darkness here at ARe.

I have new favourite tumblr this week, where I found this cool short film. Check out That German Guy.

  1. I’ve had Special Forces for a while but haven’t found the time to start it yet. I’ve heard really good things about it though.

I read Out of the Darkness recently. Nice but not great. 🙂

    1. Darkness was ok, just not as good as the 1st one. Like the style though, so I’d be interested in seeing what she comes out with next.

SF is cool. Be interested to see what you reckon!
